    Structure of the Chiral Scalar Superfield in Ten Dimensions

    We describe the tensors and spinor-tensors included in the θ\theta-expansion of the ten-dimensional chiral scalar superfield.     A mission reading of the Fourth Gospel

    The Fourth Gospel has contributed to the Church’s thinking on several theological themes. This thesis studies the missiology of the Gospel by reading the Fourth Gospel from a missional perspective. The study does not seek to find a pre-defined mission within the Gospel but seeks instead to discover the central message of the Gospel from a missional point of view. The former approach extracts the necessary parts of a text here and there to prove a pre-defined mission while the latter reads the whole story of the Gospel from a missional perspective. Part I concerns my motivation for this approach, and the meaning and shaping of a missional hermeneutic for reading the Gospel. Part II concerns the application of the shaped missional hermeneutic to the reading of the given text. The study divides the Gospel into four parts. From the point of view of a missional reading of the Gospel, the first part (1:1-2:12) of the Gospel provides a Johannine grand narrative of the missional God as an introduction for the rest of the Gospel. The second part (2:13-12:50) reveals a two-fold ministry of Jesus. One is his encounters with the Jews demolishing the pride of their natural descent and the other is his interactions with individuals, particularly the marginalized, building a new community through those who believe in him. The third part (13:1-17:26) addresses Jesus’ exclusive interaction with his disciples. Jesus explains what is expected of the discipleship community regarding not only what they are to do but also what they are to be, the oneness with the divine community and also among themselves. The fourth part (18:1-21:25) includes the achievement of Christ through his crucifixion and resurrection. The achievement includes both the fulfilment of what was prophesied in the Old Testament and the forming of a believing discipleship community. Part III of the study concerns the findings from the reading and the implications of them for mission, particularly for the concept of missio Dei. To conclude the thesis, I revisit a missional hermeneutic which I propose for this study, and also present limitations and suggestions of the study

    Orientational Melting in Carbon Nanotube Ropes

    Using Monte Carlo simulations, we investigate the possibility of an orientational melting transition within a "rope" of (10,10) carbon nanotubes. When twisting nanotubes bundle up during the synthesis, orientational dislocations or twistons arise from the competition between the anisotropic inter-tube interactions, which tend to align neighboring tubes, and the torsion rigidity that tends to keep individual tubes straight. We map the energetics of a rope containing twistons onto a lattice gas model and find that the onset of a free "diffusion" of twistons, corresponding to orientational melting, occurs at T_OM > 160 K.Comment: 4 page LaTeX file with 3 figures (10 PostScript files

    Electronic Structures of Antiperovskite Superconductor MgCNi3_3 and Related Compounds

    Electronic structure of a newly discovered antiperovskite superconductor MgCNi3_3 is investigated by using the LMTO band method. The main contribution to the density of states (DOS) at the Fermi energy EFE_{\rm F} comes from Ni 3dd states which are hybridized with C 2pp states. The DOS at EFE_{\rm F} is varied substantially by the hole or electron doping due to the very high and narrow DOS peak located just below EFE_{\rm F}. We have also explored electronic structures of C-site and Mg-site doped MgCNi3_3 systems, and described the superconductivity in terms of the conventional phonon mechanism.Comment: 3 pages, presented at ORBITAL2001 September 11-14, 2001 (Sendai, JAPAN

    The cationic complex [(pymox-Me2)RuCl2]+BF4− was found to be a highly effective catalyst for the C−H bond oxidation reaction of arylalkanes in water. For example, the treatment of ethylbenzene (1.0 mmol) with t-BuOOH (3.0 mmol) and 1.0 mol % of the Ru catalyst in water (3 mL) cleanly produced PhCOCH3 at room temperature. Both a large kinetic isotope effect (kH/kD = 14) and a relatively large Hammett value (ρ = −1.1) suggest a solvent-caged oxygen rebounding mechanism via a Ru(IV)-oxo intermediate species
